Who we are

We are a voice for reason in Australia, a national umbrella organisation of “free thought” groups (atheists, humanists, rationalists, secularists and skeptics) and individuals who care about evidence-based reasoning and good science in public debate.

We aim to influence public policy and public opinion in favour of a secular society, freedom of inquiry and universal human values.

We share:

  • a naturalistic understanding of the universe;
  • the view that there is no credible evidence for the existence of supernatural beings or phenomena; and
  • a commitment to the development and use of evidence-based reasoning and universal human values for the benefit of society.

Fighting fact-free journalism: a how-to guide

A growing cohort of commentators has bemoaned the descent of contemporary political “debate” into a largely fact-free zone.

People used to be entitled to their own opinions, but not their own set of facts. In the contemporary spectacle that passes for politics, it appears as though politicians are also entitled to make up their own facts at will.

Why do our universities teach shonky “magic”?

This group consists of more than 400 Australian professors, academics, researchers and scientists who work in biomedicine. I’m one of them – a very junior one.
